Syria’s Trauma
Before the current war began, about 10% of Syria’s people were nominally Christian and enjoyed equality and respect. However, the rise of Islamist militant groups, and especially the emergence of Islamic State (ISIS), led to violent anti-Christian persecution. Half the population is displaced and nearly five million people have fled the country, including at least half a million Christians.
Yet most Western governments continue to discriminate against Syrian Christian refugees. This is despite a European Parliament resolution in 2016 that recognised the systematic killing of Christians and other minorties by Islamic State as genocide.
